//ART CONSULTING

Disk-Kareem Burke, London Times, December 2004
These images offer a look at some of the works I selected for Mr. Burke’s collections. They include Basquiat, Richard Mayhew, Robert Thompson, Deborah Grant and Ellen Gallagher. All have appreciated considerably since we began acquiring them in 2002.

The great art collections of our time were built by people with a discerning eye or with access to the services of an astute advisor. These great collections were built by selecting from the emerging or mid-career promising art talents of their day. For this reason my focus is on contemporary art, often cutting edge and international in scope.

My objective is to aid the clients in educating themselves so that they become conversant about their art purchases, building to becoming an active participate in its selection. The collection should appreciate in financial, aesthetic and intellectual value over time. Together we will learn what is the best type of art for that person to collect based on practical concerns like space, climate, budget and personal objectives.

As an established artist, collector, and arts organizations trustee, I have special access to many artists and works that are not readily available to all buyers. I have also established close relationships with commercial galleries both in New York and San Francisco. The work I have created for more than 15 years is in the collections of top American museums, major cities and celebrity clients and I am a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Grant recipient. I served for seven years on the executive board of the first artist-in-residency, site-specific exhibition space in the United States, Capp Street Project in San Francisco. In addition, I served as chair of the San Francisco MOMA’s Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art (SECA) auxiliary whose mission to promote and exhibit biannually at the Museum the work of local contemporary artists succeeded so well that most of the artists have been included in the Whitney Biennial, received major gallery representation or international critical acclaim.

Terms
A retainer of $1,500 per continuous 12 month period must be paid in advance and is non refundable or transferable. This retainer will entitle you to 20 hours of phone consultations, art shopping or research. Additional hours will be billed at $50 per hour and must be paid upon receipt of invoice or future sessions will cease.

You (the client) will pay the retail cost for art works purchased and the galleries will share their commission with me (the consultant) ranging from 10-20%. All galleries will do this so there is no incentive for me to encourage you to patronize any particular space for any reason other than the merit of the art.

The client must commit to a purchasing budget of no less than $100,000 in a continuous 12-month period. This does not include applicable taxes, crating, insurance, shipping, installation, the retainer or any other miscellaneous costs.

The client will be responsible for any expenses incurred during buying sessions such as transportation, meals, reference books, etc. whether the consultant is with the client or not. Sessions will be no less than one hour and no more than five.

The consultant can be present during installations of art but will not physically hang or place the works. Nor will the consultant take responsibility for the installer or any damages to the client’s home, office or space caused due to shipping, uncrating or installing. The consultant will be paid $100 and hour for this service.

The consultant will rsecure authentication from sellers that all the works purchased are properly valued for the market at time of purchase. These papers will be for insurance and estate valuations only. The consultant is not responsible for any criminal behavior on the part of sellers such false documentation or attributions.

Subsequent purchases made by the client after the expiration of our 12-month period and depletion of the budget (whichever comes first) are not my responsibility regarding the authentication or gallery integrity.

Should the client wish the consultant to advise on placement or installation of subsequent purchases after the end of the contract period of 12 continuous months, the services of the consultant can be retained at a rate of $150 per hour with transportation to and from the site paid or provided by the client and is not included in the $150.

The consultant does not guarantee that all works will appreciate in value but does promise that the client will receive many years of pure pleasure from the art and will find their life greatly enhanced.

01-One of the 10 sessions will have the child introduced into the actual working environment of an artist (preferably one whose work their parents collect). Often they actually collaborate with the artist on an original work of art the child will take away or the child will make a piece of art on their own that is inspired by the meeting.

02-Deborah Grant, a former AIR at the Studio Museum in Harlem creates dense works that translate her message through the use icons. The child will come to understand presumably complex terms of art because of his or her practical interaction with the works and through artist contact that epitomizes these concepts.

03-The children fall into very sophisticated conversations about ideas, art and technique when put in these circumstances. Their attention and focus becomes very sharp during these sessions and they are often inspired to do further research on their own time.

04-Because the child and I have already spent several sessions together by the time we visit an artist’s studio, I know the type of artist who will most intrigue and pique their interest.

05-Obviously, the temperament of the artist must mesh with the child as well. The experiences can be as much fun for the artist as they are for the child and they are often inspired and rejuvenated after their exposure to the child’s energy and wonder.

06-During sessions such as these, I am verbally reinforcing knowledge we have acquired in our previous sessions and making connections between abstract and concrete experiences. The sessions may include but are not limited to visits to Museum exhibits where we learn how to view art and interpret labels, talks with curatorial staff, tours of storage facilities or exhibits during installations, special viewings of back room art and conversations with commercial gallery staff, drawing and art making sessions.

07-Parents or guardians bring the child to a predetermined site where I am waiting and return after a predetermined interval of 2-3 hours time to pick them up. Parents, friends and siblings are not invited to remain with us during the session. Any admission tickets, books, art supplies or other items purchased for the child are reimbursed (receipts will be provided) if they do not arrive with their own funds. Parents may arrange a set dollar limit.

08-The entire 10 sessions are paid in advance and a calendar of dates is agreed upon at that time. Cancellations must occur 48 hours in advance due to the elaborate arrangements and scheduling that occurs. The session and its fee are forfeited if the session is cancelled in less than 48 hours.

09-The objective of the education program is to increase the child’s knowledge, confidence, appreciation for contemporary art, critical understanding and awareness of fine art and craft through immersion.

10-The sessions are fun and make a deep understanding of the art world an integral part of the child’s life. They begin to discern what is good, what is mediocre and what they like. The child becomes comfortable dealing with the movers and shapers of the NY art scene through personal contact and actual participation in their functions.

11-Parents are encouraged to schedule the child no more than twice per week and to skip a week at least once during the program. Children should always have eaten within a reasonable time before their session.

12-Since the classes occur during the summer, some sessions can be scheduled for the Hamptons, and may involve Brooklyn as well as Manhattan. Sessions are scheduled Monday through Saturday between the hours of 10am and 3pm.

13- Because of the preparations and individual personal time involved in each session, no more than three students are accepted per summer with one child waiting listed. Sessions begin once the child is done with their regular school year.

14-The cost is $2,500 for 10 sessions paid in advance. Supplies, materials, art objects, entry tickets, transportation and food are not included.
